At our veteran-run small business in Pennsylvania, USA (learn more about us here - About Us), we specialize in creating metal gifts like key holders, keychains, and signs for your house, both indoors and outside. But we also know first-hand how difficult it can be to find the perfect stocking stuffers and gifts for everyone on your list. That's why we've compiled this blog showcasing some of our favorite and popular metal gifts for the holiday season.
Kids LOVE anything personalized, don't they? I ways always wanting something with my name on when I was growing up! Our sports and dance medal hangers are extremely popular for Christmas gifting. We have multiple styles and sports covered in our Display Your Swag collection, and any of our welcome signs can be personalized to make a very cool sign for a bedroom door by swapping the word welcome for a name. Both of our kids had these growing up!
One of our most popular themes at this time of year is the deer wildlife collection. Living and working in rural PA, we are no stranger to these beautiful creatures. In fact, the forest behind us is home to a very large herd. The deer buck & doe key rack is by far the biggest seller as it's appreciated by both wildlife lovers and hunters alike!
Consider a metal sign if you're looking for something a little more unique. Metal signs make a great statement piece in any home or office and are available in various sizes and styles. Plus, they're incredibly versatile. Choose from inspirational quotes, fun and funky designs, or even custom-made pieces. The monograms are especially meaningful for someone you love.
When it comes to stocking stuffers, metal gifts like our keychains and mini key racks are a great choice. Not only are they sturdy and long-lasting, but they're also incredibly versatile. Whether you're shopping for a friend, family member, teacher, or colleague, there's sure to be a perfect gift for everyone on your list, whatever your budget. They start at $7.99 and you can ship up to 4 of them for the same low price anywhere in the USA! Don't know what theme to select? We offer monograms too!
We have created some cute little snowmen to add a touch of fun. At just 10 inches high they are tall enough to make their presence known and small enough not to cause a nuisance. Or perhaps you prefer our cute little gnomes. There are 5 designs that are available in 4 different colors and are perfect for anybody who has a love of gnomes and whimsy.
If you are looking for a new Christmas Tree decoration, browse our tree ornaments selection – we have many to choose from. Our themes include traditional faith options, pets and animals, Santa and snowflakes, and even the wild and whimsical gnomes, aliens and bigfoot! Like most of our products, these are in-house designs that you won't find anywhere else.
If you are still undecided, opt to give your loved one the 'gift of choice' this Christmas! Our gift cards are the perfect idea for someone who you know lives far away. too. You can have the gift card delivered to your email or sent straight to your friend —what nicer way to surprise someone than with a gift in their inbox.
And we have a variety:
traditional Christmas,
cute Christmas gift cards,
happy holidays, and
Happy Hanukkah gift cards.
This year, we have a wishlist feature on our website; you can add any products you like to your wishlist. A really great benefit of this is you can sign into the wishlist app and access it on any device, desktop, mobile or tablet—we think that's pretty cool! And you can share it to others who need ideas on what to get you!
Why buy from us?
We aren't one to blow our trumpets, but we are genuinely proud of the products we create. We know how frustrating it is when you purchase something as a gift, and it only lasts a short period before it's wearing away and has to go in the garbage. That's not good for the environment either. We 100% promise that our products are made with galvannealed steel (a specially protected type of steel) in Pennsylvania and they are made to last for years to come—and yes, that goes for our outdoor products too.
We are a family-based business with a small but perfectly formed team. We are committed to delivering the highest standard possible and we want you and your loved ones to enjoy our products for years to come.
Order Deadlines for Christmas Delivery
The last date to order your gifts is Monday 18th December. This date gives us time to pack your orders and ensure they are with you in time for the big day. If you need something custom made, get it into us by Dec 14. Local customers who don't need shipping can order right up to Dec 20 for a custom gift.

But have you ever wondered how people celebrate the holiday in different parts of the world? In this blog post, we'll explore Christmas traditions from around the globe as well as some popular customs here in the USA.
In Sweden, the holiday season kicks off on December 13th with Lucia Day, named after Saint Lucia. To celebrate, girls dress up in white gowns and wear a crown of lighted candles on their heads. They then go singing from house to house, offering coffee and saffron buns.
In Germany, many families have an Advent wreath with four candles. Each Sunday leading up to Christmas, one more candle is lit and families spend time together, singing songs, and preparing for the holiday.
On the other side of the world, in Australia, Christmas in the summer months means a lot of outdoor activities. Many people go to the beach or have a barbecue with family. The traditional meal is a roast turkey, but it's often served cold with salads and seafood.
In Japan, where only 1% of the population is Christian, Christmas is more of a commercial holiday. Couples often take a romantic walk around the city, eating KFC and cake for dinner. "KFC?: You ask. Me too! Apparently this started in the 70's when some tourists where in Japan over Christmas. Unable to find turkey, they opted for some fried chicken. Shortly after, KFC saw a great opportunity for serving special Christmas KFC meals on the big day!
Now, let's talk about some holiday customs here in the USA. In many households, decorating the Christmas tree is a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Families will often have special ornaments with sentimental value that they place prominently on the tree each year. Another popular tradition is sending out Christmas cards to friends and loved ones. People often include family photos and a personal note to those they may not see often.

]]>To put it simply, nominal sizes are “in name only” and full sizes are “actual sizes”. Many big box stores sell 4x4 and 6x6 lumber that are usually “nominal”. Their actual sizes are 3½ x 3½ and 5½ x 5½ inches. However, independent lumber yards typically sell the full sizes, so a 4x4 is truly 4 inches.
This does vary throughout the country, and it sometimes depends on whether the wood is pressure treated or not. Confusing? Yes, it is confusing to most people, so we’ve put together this guide to help you determine which posts you have, and which caps you need.
Watch the 3-minute video or continue reading below.
One crucial aspect that often gets overlooked is the accurate measurement of the fence post. We have a range of sizes; the most commonly ordered metal caps are nominal 4x4 and nominal 6x6.
Watch the video to see the comparison between the two sizes mentioned above to help you visualize. The larger fence cap represents a full 4x4 fence cap, while a nominal 4x4 cap is visibly smaller. You will see that it is possible to fit one inside the other. Remember, ordering without measuring can lead to ill-fitting caps and they will not be able to do the job they are designed for.
If your post is in between sizes, you might either have to use a shim and size up, or shave the sides of your post and size down on the cap.
If you buy a copper or stainless steel fence cap from us, we advise applying a bead of silicone on all four edges of the post top. This ensures that any bugs cannot crawl up underneath the cap and cause any damage to the wood. Then, place the cap on the top of the post and give it a gentle tap for a snug fit.
To further secure the cap, there are two screw holes—one on one side and another directly opposite, the copper nails or stainless steel screws are included in the price. To avoid damaging the attractive head of the nails, use a rubber mallet or place a piece of cloth between your steel hammer and the copper nail. Once the rosebud nails are in, you can be assured that the cap will stay secure for a long time—our copper nails have a threaded shank that keeps them safely in place.
At The Metal Peddler, we believe in delivering nothing but the best, which is why our caps are 100% copper. These are a great weight at 21 gauge and will patina beautifully over time. The rate and level of patina will depend on your local weather and environment.
The stainless steel caps are made with 304 stainless. This is a more rust-resistant stainless for more durable caps.
We're proud to say that by choosing us, you're supporting a small, family-run, veteran business based in Western Pennsylvania.
We've created this guide to help you avoid the expensive costs of returning incorrectly sized caps. Many people tend to overlook this essential step of measuring their fence posts and it is the number one (and virtually only) reason that customers return caps. Just a few minutes of your time can save you a lot of trouble and ensure you order the correct size.
Once installed, the caps will be at work protecting the top of the post from insects, rain, and other conditions that cause your expensive wood to deteriorate, crack, and eventually rot.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. We hope it will assist you in choosing the right cap for your project. Have a great day!
Remember, when it comes to protecting your fences, the choice of the right fence cap is crucial. Trust The Metal Peddler Inc for your fence cap needs. We're here to serve you with our commitment to quality, durability, and customer satisfaction. If you have any questions, please contact us so we can help you.

Finger Lakes (Watkins Glen), New York
The Finger Lakes region in New York state is one of the most stunning areas in the country. The Watkins Glen State Park, in particular, is a popular camping destination. Established in 1863, the park boasts 19 waterfalls that visitors can explore, along with 200-foot cliffs, drop-dead-gorgeous views, and hiking trails. The campsites here boast amenities such as hot showers, flush toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables.
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Yosemite, California
When it comes to iconic and awe-inspiring campsites, Yellowstone National Park and Yosemite definitely make the cut. Yellowstone is the oldest national park in the world, with unparalleled natural beauty that includes geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, and wildlife. Yosemite is another breathtaking location, with granite cliffs, pristine waterfalls, and hiking trails galore. Both parks offer stunning amenities and great camping sites.
Visits the Ancient Redwood Trees: Redwood National and State Parks, Sequoia National Park & Yosemite
One of the earliest facts I learned about America from all across the way in England (this is Danielle) was about the Redwoods. I clearly remember looking at the encyclopedia with my dad (or maybe it was the Guinness Book of World Records) and seeing a photograph of a tree that was so large it had a tunnel through it that cars could drive through. You may well have seen such photos yourself. How humbling to see such a sight (and site) in real life! This is one on my Bucket List!
Spread across three states on the West Coast, the Redwood National and State Parks are a must-visit for those looking for a camping experience among stunning giants that tower over 300 feet tall, with some even surviving for over 2,000 years. The park boasts miles of hiking trails, scenic drives, and countless opportunities for wildlife viewing and exploring. Just be sure to pack cozy layers as temperatures can vary.
I share this particular old photo (from public domain) of John Muir at the tallest General Sherman in 1902 because John Muir is one of Jason's favorite writers and poets.
I first began volunteering in the 1980s through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in the UK, and Jason through his time in Boy Scouts. After we married, we started doing a lot of service work together and with our kids. Some of those projects were small – a day picking up litter in a nearby town, for example, or helping out at a center that put together disaster relief supplies.
In 2013, we felt the nudge to do more, and that started an 8-year-long journey of fundraising and team meetings as we travelled to Honduras year after year, volunteering at a children's home and school for kids who would otherwise be homeless or spending their days on the streets. It was really incredible to watch the youngsters grow, with the young teens maturing into young adults: attending trade schools, completing high school, and hoping for college. And each year we loved to see some of the little ones as they became pre-teens and teens, developing very typical teenage personalities, playful, hopeful, and ambitious. They could never do these things without the hope and opportunity offered by places like that kids' home.
Each year, our jobs were vastly different, from cleaning & painting their cafeteria to helping haul sand for the concrete for a new school or building a pavilion where children could spend time with their parents. Jason installed heavy-duty metal screens to reduce the flies and mosquitoes in the kitchen & dormitories. At the same time, I did crafts with some of the younger children – giving them the time and kindness that all children desperately need. Hearing testimonies from the children and working with them strengthened not only my faith, but also my ability to help others in our own community at home.
When the COVID pandemic hit and we were unable to travel to Honduras, we focused our efforts closer to home, spending a week doing projects on a senior's house and volunteering at a local organization for female Veterans. In the following months, our own hearts were challenged about where we should be serving, and at this time we felt the need to spend more time in our hometown. Every town has problems, some worse than others, whether it's poverty, violence, homelessness, animal welfare, poor literacy, alcohol and substance abuse, and so much more. There are usually nonprofits that serve in all of these areas, and they are often desperate for help – whether it's doing physical labor, helping with fundraising or donation drives, or simply raising awareness of the problems, their causes, and the solutions.
Earlier this year, I taught a free budgeting class at our local library and also began volunteering on the board of a local organization called VOICe–Victim Outreach & Intervention Center, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide support and advocacy for victims and survivors of violent situations & trafficking and to raise awareness through educational programs with the goal of reducing violence in the community. I chose this organization in particular as violence has peppered my own life at times, and I am deeply aware of its long-lasting impact on a person's life and family. My hope is that through serving here, I am able to be a part of a movement that reduces violence and empowers victims and survivors to lead hopeful and fulfilling lives.
It's not all work work work! Jason has some fun on the world's dodgiest "scaffolding".
I'd love to know more about how you serve and what difference it's made to your own life. If you've never considered volunteering or you've dismissed it thinking you don't have the time or you don't think you have anything to offer, I urge you to take another look. Our communities need every little bit of empathy and bold compassion that we can offer. And by bold compassion, I mean one that acts, not just sympathizes. We might not be able to change the world individually, but collectively we can. Decide what causes you care about, and think about your skills. You have something to offer!
Some ideas!

International Firefighters Day May 4th 2023
Visit - https://www.firefightersday.org/
Volunteer firefighters in the USA are true unsung heroes. These brave individuals put their lives on the line day after day to protect their communities, and yet they receive little recognition for the work that they do. The majority of firefighters in the United States are volunteers. According to statistics from 2017, around 70% of firefighting personnel–comprising more than 800,000 people — are volunteer firefighters. This means that most of these heroic men and women have full-time jobs outside of their volunteer service – yet still find time to dedicate themselves to protecting their communities at a moment's notice.
These devoted professionals train hard to ensure they're up to date with best practices and safety regulations. Firefighters must also attend regular meetings and seminars to keep their skills sharp. On top of all these commitments, volunteer firefighters often put in hundreds of hours each year responding to calls for service.
The work that volunteer firefighters do is nothing short of incredible – it takes a great amount of courage, selflessness, and commitment to rise up and serve their communities when the call comes. There's no doubt that these brave individuals are deserving of far more recognition than they're currently receiving. With their dedication and hard work, they truly are heroes in our midst.
We owe it to these courageous men and women to acknowledge their bravery and thank them for protecting our communities with such passion and integrity. Without them, we would be at a great loss indeed.
Join the Metal Peddler in taking a moment to recognize and appreciate the volunteer firefighters all across the US who put their lives on the line every single day, and for those volunteers in the background who keep the stations running, the funds coming in for safety equipment and trucks, and providing support to the public who have suffered the devastating losses from fires. They are true heroes, and we owe them our gratitude for their selfless service.
Volunteer at a local fire department!
“Each and every day, ordinary community members are stepping up to help their fellow citizens in times of need. They care not about time, weather, or exhaustion. They give of themselves to help with needs great and small. For a volunteer firefighter the training is long, the hours are sometimes rough, but the reward of helping others is so great. However, the volunteer fire service needs more than just volunteers willing to go into burning buildings or rescue cats. The backbone of the department is the auxiliary and social members. These people give of themselves to keep the station running. They help with clerical, cleaning, PR, and fundraising tasks. They are just as important to any station as the "heroes" that hop on those trucks. Your local Volunteer Fire Station has opportunities for everyone to be a helper.” - Steph Steele-Morris, FF/EMT

]]>Consider what it takes to be one of these dedicated professionals!
From testing new powerlines in hazardous conditions and restoring service after major storms to working grueling hours amid unexpected obstacles—being a linesman is more than just a job. So together, let us honor and celebrate our hardworking country’s greatest assets—America’s outstanding line workers!
Linemen are unsung heroes of the modern world, risking their lives daily to keep electricity running to our homes and businesses. Working on power lines high up in the air and often in extreme weather conditions, these brave men and women train for years to safely maneuver around live power lines and install new ones or repair existing ones.
To qualify as a linesman, workers must be certified by an accredited organization such as the International Lineman’s Association. This certification requires extensive training that covers topics like electrical safety, rigging techniques, and aerial rescue operations. Once certified, linemen begin their career working with a more experienced lineman.
As you can imagine, the external environment can be dangerous due to unpredictable winds or lightning strikes which may put lives at risk. Linemen must also wear special protective gear such as insulated rubber gloves and boots when dealing with live wires to prevent electrocution.
In addition to the dangers associated with electricity, linesmen have to work in places with extreme temperatures. Freezing cold in winter months or searing heat in summer months can make it difficult for linemen to climb poles and perform their job safely. High levels of humidity can also cause increased stress on the body as well as medical issues like dehydration or heatstroke if they are not adequately prepared or hydrated while working outside.
The dangerous work that linemen do is an essential service for keeping electricity flowing through our homes and businesses without interruption.
Despite these risks taken by linemen every day, they press forward with courage knowing that they play an important role in keeping our society running smoothly despite the hazardous conditions they face while doing so!
All in all, Lineman Appreciation Day on 18th April 2023 is a special day to honor how linemen sacrifice their safety to bring us the service that we rely on daily.
Although we can’t give them everything they deserve each and every day, it is important to make time to thank the linemen for their dedication and efforts. During storms and power outages lineman risk their lives to restore our services as soon as possible. Let’s celebrate it by showing some appreciation of these unsung heroes who tirelessly work for us all. Together, let's celebrate lineman appreciation day this year!

The first step in creating custom laser cut metal art is coming up with an idea. This could be anything from a simple monogram to a complex geometric design. Many artists and designers use software like Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD to create their designs, while others prefer to sketch their ideas by hand. We mostly use our CAD program and often start from a photograph.
You can see below how we took a boxer from the customer’s photo, converted it to a sketch and then to final product design.
Once the idea is finalized, it's time to create the design file that will be used for the laser-cutting process. This involves converting the sketch or digital drawing into a vector file that the laser cutter can read. The designer will also need to specify the type of metal that will be used, as well as the thickness and size of the piece.
With the design file ready, it's time for the laser-cutting process to begin. A sheet of metal is loaded onto the laser cutter, which uses a high-powered laser beam to cut out the design with incredible precision. Depending on the complexity of the design and size of the piece, this process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.
Once the piece has been cut out, it's time for any necessary finishing touches. This could include sanding down rough edges and finishing with powder coat for added protection and aesthetic appeal.
And voila! After completing all these steps, we have a custom-made laser-cut metal art piece ready for display. Whether it's a personalized wall hanging or a unique business sign, these pieces are sure to make a statement wherever they're placed.
Creating custom laser cut metal art is what we love doing, with careful planning and attention to detail, we can bring your ideas to life in this exciting medium. So, if you want some custom work done for you, whether you have an idea or would like us to design you something unique, from key racks to garden stakes or tree décor, please e-mail us.
Custom doesn't mean high price; it means it's made just for you.
We love a good love story and Danielle and Jason's story is a little extraordinary. It all started on an online forum. Danielle lived in the UK and Jason in the US. Their conversations soon developed into discussions on email and long-distance phone calls. Danielle then decided to take the leap of faith by going to the US to meet Jason in person and the rest, as they say, is history.
Throughout their marriage, animals have played a major role in their lives. Danielle and Jason are passionate about rescuing pets from shelters. They currently have Libby, who is a mix of an Australian Shepherd and a Border Collie. She is 9 years old. Libby regularly goes to work with Danielle and Jason. She entertains the 5-strong team daily and has mastered the art of pestering everyone for treats, not that they take much pestering as all the team adore her! In December 2022, they rescued two cats, Penny & Chloe, who settled in very nicely and made themselves at home.
Jason's background is an inspiring story of commitment and courage. Aged just 17, he joined the US Army in the DEP (Delayed Entry Program), became a paratrooper and served in Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989/90. However, in 1991 Jason had a bad parachute accident in a night-time training exercise, resulting in him moving to another role in the army but it wasn’t for him. After leaving the army Jason got a job in the U.S. Marshalls Service before pursuing a course in a civilian career.
Danielle and Jason live a contented life. Whether spending time with their now grown-up family, curling up with a good book, or exploring Pennsylvania's stunning state parks, there is never a dull moment for this couple! Jason loves trying new creative hobbies. So far, he has explored painting, making soap and creating Lichtenberg wood, and steel tables. Over the years, these different hobbies have helped Jason manage his PTSD. In addition, the couple have been able to sell some of these products to raise funds for mission trips to Honduras. Danielle and Jason are both keen to "give back" to the community and in their spare time you can often find them volunteering their time and service.
The business first began when Jason began an apprenticeship as a machinist. As a side gig, he made copper lanterns from his small desk in his apartment in the Projects. He would then sell these at craft shows to support his young family. After becoming a single dad, Jason didn't have the time to work on his side gig, and he focussed on completing his Journeyman Machinist apprenticeship.
In 2003, after he had met Danielle and the couple needed to make some money quickly, Jason began crafting again. Danielle told him to "make something to sell or sell the copper". Jason made a pot rack, and they sold it on eBay. Little did they know they had just completed their first sale of what would become a successful business. By the end of 2004, Jason was making enough on eBay to be able to work full-time in the industry with Danielle by his side.
“He would make beautiful pieces, and I would list, sell and pack them. In 2005, I built our first website. Over the next few months and years, our product range increased as we learned more and more skills. We began to sell pot hanging hooks, copper fence caps, mailboxes and range hoods. Jason gained a national reputation for his beautiful work.” Danielle
Their plan was to design and make accessories for the range hoods, but this changed when Danielle lost her keys one day. To help stay organized, Jason decided to make her a key hanger. Although this has helped Danielle a lot, there is still the occasional time that she loses her keys! Jason's key holder and leash hangers are extremely popular with customers in the US and further afield.
The couple values their close-knit team who has been with them for many years, with each member bringing unique ideas and creativity to the table.

As usual, we have some core favorites - our popular key racks and leash hangers, some with your favorite dog breeds as well as that work for any type of pup; the wildlife art and welcome signs, and some faith-based metal art.
In addition, we have some awesome new metal snow gauges with great themes - from winter snowflakes and snowman to a yeti and wildlife. These were a huge hit at Franklin Applefest this year and we know the snowbelt folks will love them!
The new birdfeeder is a great way to keep the birds fed over winter and into spring! And we're excited to be taking custom orders in store for the new monogram designs.
Customers love this store and regulars come back year on year. A variety of small businesses are represented and this year, the quality of offerings is very high! You can find stocking stuffers from $3 and wall art of $3,000! There really is something for every taste and every wallet.
If you are in the PA/ Western NY/ OH/ WV area, you'll find the huge mall near the I-79/I-80 interchange.
At the core of our business since its inception has been our copper work. Jason has been honing his skills as a Master Craftsman since the late 90's. As a Journeyman Machinist by trade, he began crafting copper in his apartment, and in 2004, we decided to take that "side hustle" and turn it into a full time business.
Jason's skills producing stunning copper décor are superb. Beautiful pot racks and incredible range hoods have been our specialty for almost 18 years; we have even shipped copper hoods out to Hawaii, Malaysia, and New Zealand! After being approached by a designer in 2006 for a hood "smoky metal look", which was featured in multiple magazines over the years, our collection expanded to what's become a major design style across the USA - the rustic industrial look.
In 2007, we opened another business, Artisan Metal Shop, focusing in the steel area and other metals, cutting metal art. Originally intending to make accessories to compliment our range hood line, one day Jason decided to make a key rack because Danielle was always on the hunt for her keys. After a bit of tweaking and perfecting the design, voila! Our key and leash rack line was developed.
Since that time, we've probably made and shipped hundreds of thousands of key racks across the country and world! Our dog breed line remains our most popular but it had stiff competition this year with our campers!
All that to say, over the past couple of years, we've felt that draw to wind up our hood business and move our energies full time into our laser work. Earlier this year, we officially closed the hood line (with a couple still to make for clients) and we are giving it our all to one area of our business. Both websites have been merged into this one, our original one, The Metal Peddler. It's come a long way since Danielle built their first version in 2004!
Here's to the past 18 years of copper! And onto the next chapter with Louie (the Laser).

In this picture, the 2 chains on each end meet so the rack will hang from just 2 points in the ceiling.
* The simplest way is to hang the rack in the same direction as the joists, so you can simply measure point to point across the joist, drill, fix in the screws and hang the rack.
* If you prefer to hang the rack at right angles to the joists, find 2 joists and measure the distance across. Make sure that the distance between them will allow you to still hang your chains at angles, as in the photographs. Depending on the size of your rack, you might need to go to the next joist.
If your rack has 4 ceiling points
In this photo, the customer preferred to use 4 hanging points. This is recommended if you have a heavy pot rack and/or a lot of heavy pots and pans.
This spreads the weight of the rack out across 4 points, putting less pressure on each ceiling hook.
In such a case, you will need to find 2 joists.
The rack above was 30” wide, the joists 16” apart. Angling the rods slightly outwards, they could reach 2 joists.
Note that the 4 point hanging is our preferred method. We do not sell ceiling hooks because we recommend getting a type that will specifically work for your ceiling type.
Well, the answer really is - it depends. Yes, copper will tarnish over time as it reacts with the air and it will develop a patina. That patina will be different depending on whether the item is inside or outside. If you add rain, salty air, or pollutants to the mix, the patina will eventually turn an attractive green, a look many people find very desirable (think of copper roofs that have turned green). So, for those who want the patina-look, minimal cleaning is required and certainly no polishing!
For those of you who buy copper for the warm shine & polished look, say for your kitchen, there are many ways of very easily keeping that wonderful look.
Solid copper Vs Copper-plated
Copper is a very popular metal, not only because it looks so great but because it is strong & versatile. It is also very durable and will last many years, but will the finish look so good in that many years? Many manufacturers use copper-plated steel or iron which can start off looking great. Eventually, that plating can start to thin out, leaving a piece looking irregular with the metal underneath showing through and ruining the whole look.
With solid copper, your piece can look as good in 20, 30 or 50 years as it does today!
Cleaning
There are many products available that you can use to clean up your copper, or you can make your own products from ingredients in your pantry!
First of all, is your product lacquered? If so, please follow the instructions from the manufacturer because polishing can ruin the lacquer.
Dusting and occasional cleaning with warm soapy water can often be enough for your copper. But to get that wonderful shine back here are a few tried and tested methods:
Shop Bought Products
Most are fast and easy, but follow instructions and maintain caution with some.
Wenol All Metal Polish, Bar Keeper’s Friend, Wright’s Copper Cream and Brasso are just a few. Our current favorite is Brasso Multi-Purpose Metal Polish which produces a wonderful polished finish.
Home Made Solutions
There are some very easy ways to clean copper by just raiding your fridge or pantry! Some of these are great on flat pieces, like the bottom of copper pots.
Follow these simple steps, and you'll be able to keep your copper as warm and polished as the day you bought it for many years!

Why buy real copper instead of copper plated steel?
Despite the increasing costs of our basic raw material, solid copper, we refuse to compromise on quality as many of our competitors have done by switching to copper plated steel.
Copper plating can look great to start with. Your product is nice & shiny, easy to keep clean. But what happens over time?
Featured image at the top of the page: a comparison of a 7-year-old copper plated piece against a 50-year-old real copper bowl.
Over time, plating begins to wear thin, either from cleaning, wear & tear or environmental factors. The thinning copper plate looks patchy & ugly as the underlying metal shows through. If exposed to humidity or moisture, that underlying metal can begin to rust, making the whole thing even more unsightly.
Real, heavy duty copper will last for centuries. A natural patina occurs as copper oxidizes but it will not rust or break down. Even roofing copper, which is much thinner than the copper we use, will last many years
When you are purchasing a copper product, if it doesn't state real or solid copper, be sure to ask! "Copper color", "copper coated", "copper plated" - none of this means the same as real copper & if you're paying copper prices, be sure to get what you pay for!
]]>Blowers are rated by CFM (cubic feet per minute) – that is, how much air they move. The rate of air movement and the requirement is based on the stove top you have. The more heat produced the bigger the blower you need. Check with the manufacturer of your stove for their recommendations as well as your local code requirements. A general guide is: for every 10,000 BTUs your cooktop produces, you need 100 CFM. For a ballpark example, a cooktop producing 90,000 BTUs would need a 900 CFM unit. Keep in mind, if you have very long duct runs to vent outdoors, then you might need to adjust this. Talk to us or your contractor.
You should purchase an adequate size, but don’t go overboard. If you choose a fan much larger than you need, you could end up ventilating your whole house!
An internal unit is positioned inside the range hood and pushes the air outside through the duct. An external unit sits outside of the house, on an exterior wall or roof and draws the air out. These are useful for larger fans where noise can become an issue. Note: often external units will require 10” duct and so you must also check if that is a feasible option with the structure of your home. An inline unit is also an option: these sit partway between the hood and the outside exit point--in an attic, for example.
We don't offer these with our hoods because all they really do is filter out some of the grease and then put all the air back into the kitchen, removing none of the unpleasant aromas that you might be trying to remove. Some do come with charcoal filters that couple possibly remove some of the smells, but not most of them. Unless you have no other options at all, then vented is the way to go.
Consider purchasing a unit with built in heat sensors. These will turn the fan on should excessive heat be detected and draw the heat out of the kitchen. Make sure you also chose a unit that is UL listed and HVI certified.
Make up air. Since first publishing this article, the requirement of make up air has surfaced. Make up air is a method by which, when air is drawn through the hood in a very well insulated house, additional air is added to the home to prevent a vacuum pressure. With very high CFM blowers in some homes, a lot of air being exhausted can cause big issues without this make up air. Be sure to consult with your contractor or check your local Codes. When we supply a range hood, we do have the option of also providing a make up air kit.
Different companies have different options – from regular mesh filters, baffle filters and stainless steel trays that trap grease. Modern units have filters that are dishwasher safe. Baffle filters give a professional restaurant style look but can be more expensive. What you chose is usually a personal preference on style rather than function.
By far the most common metal used to build range hoods is stainless steel. Increasingly popular are range hoods painted to match your appliances, as well as other metals such as zinc and copper, a more expensive metal but highly sought after by homeowners who want something different and more dramatic in their homes.

Copper also comes in different thicknesses, often measured in gauge or weight. The lower the gauge number, the heavier and thicker the copper. Roofers, for example, commonly use 16oz or 20oz copper (technically called “soft copper”). For our range hoods, we only ever use 48oz copper – much heavier duty & creating a much stronger hood that is far less likely to dent or ding with every day use as well as being less susceptible to surrounding heat. 48oz copper is equivalent to 14 gauge, or 062 in thickness.
With heavy duty copper comes a heavy range hood and so requires a sturdy internal structure and welded seams. Welding copper is a highly skilled and labor intensive job, far more so than welding harder metals such as steel. It provides a completely seamless and much stronger range hood. Although thicker copper is much harder to work with, the final result is most definitely worth it in looks, quality & durability! Your hood should be built to last decades.
Purchasing a custom hood made in the USA not only supports American manufacturers and keeps jobs within the country, it also gives you the reassurances of US-standards in the quality of the materials used, the methods of construction, and also the safety conditions of the workers.
Vent or exhaust hoods may vary from $150 to thousands of dollars and, as with most things, what you pay is usually what you get. Low CFM fans and cheaper construction accompany the lower priced units. If you need a big fan for a big range or want a specialty item, be prepared for a higher sticker price.
Clients choose custom & bespoke pieces for a variety of reasons: special requirements, made i the USA, handmade versus machine made, or simply because they want to go back to traditional craftsmanship & embrace true quality craftsmanship at its finest. And for us, custom made is more personal - it's made for you.

*Do dust lightly with a soft cloth only. Do not apply furniture polish!
*Do use warm soapy water on a soft cloth to remove food splashes and fingerprints. A mild detergent, such as Dawn, will be sufficient. Buff with a clean & dry soft cloth.
*Do not use abrasive scourers or sponges.
*Do not use kitchen or bathroom cleaning products, such as Mean Green, Mr Muscle etc. These will damage the surface. Avoid acidic or ammonia based cleaners - commercial or home made - that might "eat through" the protection and ruin your beautiful patina.
