Steps to Decluttering: A Guide for Homeowners and Parents

I love to declutter. It used to fill me with dread, but once I learned how to do it effectively, I began to look forward to it. I am no Marie Kondo, but disconnecting from material things is very freeing!   It started at home but we do it every so often in the shop and office too.

Here are some of my tips!

Decluttering Step 1: Start Small with Easy Wins

If you are feeling overwhelmed just thinking about the clutter in your home, you're not alone. Whether it's just disoganized or you simply have too much stuff, the key to successful decluttering is to start small and focus on easy wins first. This means tackling areas like a single drawer, a coat rack, or that infamous “junk” drawer in the kitchen. 🗄️ You'll quickly feel accomplished and motivated to move on to bigger tasks!

I like to start with spaces that can be completed in less than 20 minutes and are "non-emotional". Items that weren't gifted or expensive, so under the kitchen sink is a good one!

Decluttering Step 2: Sort and Categorize

When you’re ready to dive deeper, it's time to sort and categorize. Grab three boxes or bags and label them: Keep, Donate, and Toss. Go through your belongings and decide which items fit in each category. Trust us, letting go of items you no longer need is incredibly freeing!

Tip: Completely empty the shelf or cabinet you are decluttering, clean it, then "shop" from what you have. Would you really buy that item again? Do you really need 3 ice cream scoops? Only put back what you need, will use, and like.

Decluttering Step 3: Make It a Family Affair

Parents, this one's for you! Get the kids involved. Not only will it speed up the process, but it also teaches valuable lessons about organization and responsibility. Set a timer and turn it into a fun game. Whoever collects the most items to donate wins a small prize! 🎉 And that prize doesn't have to be a physical item, maybe it's a movie pick!

Decluttering Step 4: Invest in Quality Organizers

A clutter-free home isn’t just about getting rid of things; it's also about smart storage. Products like our American-made metal art key holders can keep your keys organized in style. Made in Pennsylvania, USA, and using sturdy 16-gauge steel, our organizers offer durability and a touch of fun with all kinds of metal art to choose from.

Decluttering Step 5: Go Digital Where You Can

Still hanging onto that mountain of paperwork? Consider scanning important documents to keep them in digital form. There are numerous apps and cloud storage options that make this process easy, effective, and low cost. Less paper means less clutter and a more streamlined space.

Decluttering Step 6: Regular Maintenance

Decluttering isn’t a one-time event; it’s an ongoing process. Schedule regular check-ins (monthly works great) to keep your home clutter-free. Quick tip: involve the family. A 15-minute clutter patrol weekly can make a huge difference! 🕒 And make a rule: one in, one out. Anytime new items are coming into the home, think about what it's replacing and gift or donate the older items.

Decluttering Step 7: Give Each Item a Home

Everything in your house needs a designated spot. When items have homes, everyone knows where to find them and where to put them back. This reduces the "where does this go?" conundrum and keeps your space tidy.

Decluttering Step 8: Celebrate Your Progress

It’s easy to get bogged down in the work, but don’t forget to celebrate your progress! Take before-and-after photos to see how far you've come. Enjoy the newfound space and the breathable atmosphere in your clutter-free home. Here's a little bonus: add some personalized metal wall art or a unique yard sign from The Metal Peddler to your newly decluttered space for a touch of American-made awesomeness! 🇺🇸
