Steps To Decluttering And Organizing Your Home Like A Pro
Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up. It’s a mindset shift. I’ve always found it liberating to let go of things that no longer serve a purpose, and I find a change of season to be the perfect time: swapping out my closet, pulling out new decor, and putting away the past.
As I go about this routine, there’s something powerful about releasing the weight of unused items, outdated stuff, and things we keep out of guilt or habit. Yes, even that dusty gift from someone dear. Letting go of the item doesn’t mean letting go of the memory. You can honor the moment, the person, or the feeling without clinging to the clutter.
I like to think of it as decluttering, dejunkifying, decrapifying - whatever word helps you feel in control and unburdened. It’s not about minimalism or perfection. It’s about choosing what truly matters and making room for it.

Why Decluttering Matters
Decluttering is not just about how your home looks. It’s about how it feels. A clutter-free space can make your home feel calmer, more functional, and more welcoming. Plus, there’s a real satisfaction in knowing where everything is when you need it.
Not everything has to go in the trash or to the thrift store. Yard sales are a great way to make a little extra cash, and local Buy Nothing, Gift & Gather, or Give Freely groups are great for rehoming items you no longer need. It feels good knowing someone else will love what you’ve let go of. ♻️ And keeping our excesses out of a landfill is a great bonus!
Step-by-Step Decluttering Guide
1. Start with Simple, Achievable Goals
You don’t have to do it all at once. Set realistic goals and start small.
- Pick one space: A desktop, a medicine cabinet, or your kitchen drawer is a great place to begin.
-
Set a timer: Try 15 to 30 minutes at a time so it feels doable.
-
Turn up the music! Listening to music or a podcast while you work can make the minutes fly!
-
Prioritize high-use areas: Think entryways, bathrooms, or kitchen counters.

2. Sort and Purge Like a Pro
Use three boxes or bags labeled Keep, Donate/Sell/Gift, and Trash.
-
Keep: Things you actually use or love.
-
Donate/Sell/Gift: Items in good condition that someone else could enjoy.
-
Trash: Broken or unusable things that just need to go.

The next revelation was GENIUS to me and it changed everything for me!

Empty the space entirely.
Clean the space - wash down the cabinet, dust the shelves etc.
Then SHOP from your own pile of stuff!
Shopping from your own items allows you to think through each piece:
When was the last time I used it?
Is it in good condition or has it expired?
If I haven't used it in several years and I give it away, can I easily (and affordably) replace it if I suddenly need it next week?
When I used this method on our kitchen utensil drawer, I found five slotted spoons. One was clearly ready to toss. Two were plenty to keep, so we gave the other two away through our local gifting group.
And I don't even want to share how old some of the spices were in that cabinet! (Okay, one was dated 2006, but don't tell Jason I told you!)
3. Organize What You Keep
Now that you’ve pared down, give everything a place.
-
Group like items together: It makes things easier to find and to stay organized in future.
-
Use smart storage: Choose containers or wall organizers that fit your space and your style.
